Symphonies - Ernst Eichner

Theresia Orchestra
Vanni Moretto

This album sheds light on previously unrecorded symphonic repertoire by Ernst Eichner.

The German composer was one of the early masters of symphonic compositions at a crucial moment in music history during the second half of the 18th century when the symphony gained momentum. Initially established as a violin player and bassoonist at the court of Duke Christian IV of Zweibrücken, who supported his first symphonies, Eichner settled in Potsdam towards the end of his life dedicating his last six symphonies to Friedrich Wilhelm II. The four symphonies on this album include Opus 1, 7, 10, and 11 spanning Eichner’s first and last collection of symphonies.

This recording was made in Mondovi, in the northern Italian region of Piedmont during the Summer of 2022, featuring Theresia’s young period instrument players led by Vanni Moretto.

“Vanni Moretto concisely presents Eichner’s symphonies with the youth orchestra, featuring approximately twenty highly committed members. They are briskly pushing forward in the Allegro movements and perform the slow movements, mostly labelled “Andante,” with a cantabile touch.” – Klassik Heute

“Moretto leads Theresia in lively and enthusiastic accounts, with jostling, ebullient textures from the full orchestra when called for. Horns, timpani, and lower strings give the music a rasping raucousness that is characteristic of historically informed performance practice, and won’t be to all tastes, but it makes for a thrilling experience” – Music Web International
